Cobus van Bosch

Route

Route is a series of roadscapes, depicting scenes along major motorways to and from Cape Town.

The paintings were created as individual artworks in the traditional landscape format, but also serve as the artist’s personal inventory of landmarks along these routes. Some of the geographical and man-made structures depicted are familiar to regular travellers on these routes, while others appear to be more obscure and mundane.

To Van Bosch each of these scenes is a visual reminder of a landmark that holds his attention each time he passes it. It may have metaphorical and symbolic meaning of a personal or more universal kind, or may intrigue him simply as interesting structures.

As he never stops at any of these places during his travels, Van Bosch chose to represent these vistas as it is seen from a passing motor vehicle. This is how he came to know it, and experiencing it also includes seeing parts of the vehicle he travels in, even reflections of light on windows.

Route is an ongoing project.
