The miners’ strike at Marikana near Rustenburg started in August 2012 and resulted in various clashes between groups of miners, mine security officers and police that finally left 47 people dead, mostly miners during clashes with police on 16 August. It has become known as the Marikana Massacre and is described as the “most lethal use of force by South African security forces against civilians since 1960”.
