Bathlaping children after their capture by Colonial forces near Langeberg, 1897. (Oil on canvas, 36cm x 46cm, 2013).

Tribes from the Langeberg region south of the Kalahari rose against colonial authorities in 1897. Kgosi Toto of the Batlharo and the Batlhaping chief Luka Jantjie were amongst those who rebelled. While Jantjie was killed and decapitated by British soldiers, the 60 year-old Toto surrendered and was sentenced to six years imprisonment with hard labour in Cape Town.
